Airports and Churches…

A friend of mine recently tweeted, “There is just something very exciting about airports.”  So true.  Whether you love them or hate them, there is something truly exciting about airports!  Just look at all the people coming and going, whether they are jetting off to exotic locations, welcoming a loved one who they haven’t seen in a long time, commuting to work between distant cities, or just enjoying the busyness of life – airports have things to offer that keep people coming back.

This naturally got me thinking?  Can the same be said about my church or your church?

This past Saturday my church was a literal beehive of activity – there wasn’t a space in the parking lot because of all that was occurring.  There was flag football, a dementia care-giver support group, and even a big card making get together for world card-making day (which by the way I didn’t even know was a designated day until this weekend).

My point?  It was awesome having to struggle to find a place to park….

Then Sunday came.  It was a lot easier to park and there weren’t near as many people.  Now, don’t get me wrong.  The lot was full, it just wasn’t to capacity.  And the building was buzzing with activity but with half as many people as were there the day before.  What was the difference?  Why were we able to fill the parking lot, grounds,  on one day – and not so much on another?

Can it be it was deemed as just not as exciting as the day before?  Do our Sundays (at my church and yours) offer things that keep people coming back?  Are we using the methods to promote the Gospel message that entice people?  Do we welcome a person and make them feel wanted?  Do we offer something that they want or need?

I don’t know – these are tough questions and ones that we really have to wrestle with…

Why?  Because I hope some day I see a tweet that says, “You know there is just something really exciting about that church!”

Until next time….
